LETS START FROM THE BEGINNING..

REFLECTIVE JOURNAL> Now a Blog

At the beginning of this project i started my reflective journal in a notepad/ sketchbook, but i found it a bit of a hassle if im honest with all the printing and sticking. So my tutor gave me the idea to process my thoughts electronically, so here it is, and 4 weeks over due.

As im in my final year at uni, we have been given our final major project to which we had to create our own briefs... so here we go..

Brief

Have you read The Boy in the Dress by the comedian David Walliams? This is truely my favourite children's book by far. You must give it a read.
But all you need to know for now to grasp my brief is that a young boy misses his Mother who left the family, so he uses woman's clothing as a way of feeling connected to his Mum. The books portrays a light- hearted story through uses of humour which is an aspect i want to look in to for my viral ad, as humour attracts a wide range of audience.

Originally i wanted to make a viral advertisement for a new ballet performance for the theatre adaptation of The Boy in the Dress. However, after discussing with my tutor, we decided that Contemporary Dance would be much more beneficial and exciting, as this will appeal to the younger audience and those interested in fashion and styling as it is a modern form.

The viral ad must include..

  • Diverse make up, hair and fashion styling.
  • I want to create a sense of movement alongside stillness.
  • This advert aims to attract a wide spread of audiences, such as todays youth who are particularly interested in fashion, styling, dance and performance.
  • humour

MAGAZINE> Industrie

<Marc Jacobs poses for Industrie mag>

As soon as i saw this editorial photoshoot in Industrie Magazine, i thought is this PERFECT INSPIRATION for my project.. A man dressed as a woman.
I like how this image creates mystery and depth through the use of lighting, styling and posture. It gives off a sexual vibe even though it is a man dressed as a woman which isn't necessarily something which everyone would be appealed to.
This image made me think about ALTER-EGOS..

*A second self which leads a different life.

PHOTOGRAPHER > Derek Blanks

Real Housewives of Atlanta

Each photograph portrays to sides of one person, which was one of my ideas for the viral.

>Destiny's Child

FASHION MOVEMENT> CLUB CULTURE

In the 70's the youth dressed up to the extreme. The quirkier the better. Women used to dress in masculine clothing, whereas men would dress in women's wear with over the top make up and hair.
Characteristics..

  • original
  • over the top
  • wild hair
  • face paint
  • structure
  • frills
  • shakespeare..

During first year in uni we studied Club Culture and heres one of my designs!..

<Make up, hair and styling by me
Model: Amanda Betts>

MUSIC> David Bowie

<uses make up to create an alter ego (stage person)>
> Boy George

FASHION > In Drag

PERFORMANCE> Paul Laidlaw

Paul Laidlaw performs in pantomimes dressed as a woman to create humour on stage, which is what i want to create.

The bright colours used within the make up and fashion styling creates an over the top imagery helping to emphasis that the man is in drag. This is something i could look more in to when creating make up templates.
