GOING VIRAL..

Dove Campaign for Real Beauty, 2006

This is a great example of viral advertising. It won a couple of awards, and is worth over £9m. It received 12m views in its first year of publication. It has been on Youtube, sent through email, social networking sites, and it has been shown and mentioned on reality host shows. It too uses stop motion showing that this is a popular form of editing to get a long film edited in to a short film. Even thought this viral advert was first seen in 2006, it still being virally passed along.

Even though this viral advert was banned, it shows that a viral advertisements need an edge about them to lure the viewers, which is definitely something this advert does. I think my idea has a slight edge to it, as the audience won't know what the advert is for, which I am hoping will make them want to google it. I will include the name of the performance, 'The Boy in the Dress.'

MEN's FASHION WITH FEMININE TOUCHES..

Men's clothing are becoming more feminine and pushing the boundaries of what men would normally wear. All the images below display some familiarity to women's clothing and are sourced from Topman online. This is something I looked in to see how much men's clothing were being inspired by feminine styling as the book is about a boy who likes dressing up in women's clothing.

The patterning on the t shirt above is definitely a design to which a few years ago would have been considered as women's clothing. However, it is clear that society of today are more open to how men dress. When walking along the high street, shop fronts and the general public are very  much in love with these patterned t shirts as they are everywhere. Clothes too are getting much tighter, as this is a fitted t- shirt, which would hug the arms and the waist.

Pokadots are genuinely a pattern to which you would really only see women wearing, however, for Spring/Summer 2012, Topshop brought out this Pokadot Blazer jacket. I personally have not yet seen this item being worn by the public, but I'm sure it does sell.

A couple of years ago, ant man who would be seen wearing skinny jeans would have been called a girl by their mates, or been laughed at been referred to as 'gay.' However, the main styling of jeans worn by men today are these skinny jeans, which typically women only used to wear.

Low V necks are becoming more popular, I still think its a style which not everyone can pull off as no one likes to see a hairy chest. Most of the men who I have seen wearing this style are have been ones look after their appearance and groom well. Pink is a colour which is seen to be very feminine, but is now a colour to which most men aged 16-25 would wear.

Flowers are definitely something which are usually aimed towards women. But as you can see they are more and more being used for men.

It is clear that the society of today are being more open minded about what they wear than they used to be. It could be that men liked this feminine styling but wanted to conform to the 'norm' and went along with what everyone else was wearing, and now more and more shops are bringing out these feminine clothing, the more people are starting to wear them.

STORYBOARD IDEAS..

I have a few ideas as to how i want the video to look. The following are rough ideas which I will need to elaborate on..

In all the ideas I want to include the application of the make up on the model, and the steps getting to the desired look.
I may include:

Clips of the model doing a dance routine to promote the contemporary dance performance.
Or clips of him spinning around with joy looking straight in to the camera as if he is looking at himself in the mirror and being excited by what he sees.

These dance clips could include clips of him without make up- looking unenthusiastic and unhappy.
And clips of the model dancing with the make up on- looking happy and performing to a high standard- showing that he feels more confident wearing make up.

The model looking in to the mirror smiling at himself, pressing his lips together, stroking his hair, appearing impressed with the way he looks.

MUSIC..

Music will play an important part in to the putting together of my film. It needs to have the right amount of energy and beat to create the correct atmosphere. Even though lyrics play an important part to a song, I am not worrying too much about this area of a song that I will chose. I don't want anything cliche.
I have asked a few people as to what songs they think I should use, and a few of them have said, 'Beautiful' by Christina Aguilera, and 'Dude looks like a Lady' by Aerosmith. I think these songs are too obvious for the theme I am doing.
I have thought about music since the beginning and haven't really came across anything that grabbed my attention, until we were hanging out with the model who will be performing in my project played this song on Youtube. Everything about was perfect, except the lyrics, as they do not exactly link to the theme of my styling. The more and more I heard the less I listened to the lyrics, and I mainly focused on the tracks beat which is what I wanted to get perfect to suit my stop motion filming techniques, and this suited.

Until We Bleed- Kleer up feat Lykke Li

The track starts slow, as does my plan shooting storyboard, then it gets a bit heavier and more in to it, and then at the end there are no lyrics, and this is where I am planning on putting an over voice of the model explaining how he feels whilst wearing make up. This I have not yet precisely got a definite answer for, in the style of how I want it and what he will be saying.

The song is about love being their drug, this relates to my video as his love is make up, and it's not

Lyrics:
The black writing shows how this song could link to Dennis and his passion for make up and dresses.
I'm naked
I'm numb
I'm stupid
I'm staying
And if Cupid's got a gun, then he's shootin'
This verse talks about her not feeling herself...linking to Dennis to not being happy at home.

Lights black
Heads bang
You're my drug
We live it
You're drunk, you need it
Real love, I'll give it
Dressing up as a girl gives Dennis that something he need so make him happy, in a sense it is his drug.

So we're bound to linger on
We drink the fatal drop
Then love until we bleed
Then fall apart in parts
He still dresses up even though some people do not think it is acceptable or normal, and this makes him feel sad

You wasted your times
On my heart
You've burned
And if bridges gotta fall, then you'll fall, too

Doors slam
Lights black
You're gone
Come back
Stay gone
Stay clean
I need you to need me
This represents when Dennis is being forced to not dress up, and his Dad banishes him from reading Vogue, watching Little Britain, dressing up, and seeing his female friend, Lisa who's idea it was to go to school dressed as a French exchange girl.

So we're bound to linger on
We drink the fatal drop
Then love until we bleed
Then fall apart in parts
He still dresses up even though some people do not think it is acceptable or normal, and this makes him feel sad
Again,

Now we're bound to linger on
We drink the fatal drop
Then love until we bleed
Then fall apart in parts
This expresses that he won't stop dressing up as a girl, even though it may cause hurt for some people
Even though this song is not aimed at young children, like Dennis, it fits in well with the adult audience, and the comedy aspect towards the novel/ performance.

INTERVIEW QUESTIONS..2

Does it bother you that I am putting make up on you?
How do you feel when you are wearing make up? Excited? Self-conscious?
Do you think make up is designed for both genders?
Can you leave the house without any make up on?
What make up do you generally wear on a day to day basis?

How do you feel being dressed in women’s clothes?
Do you feel liberated?
How would you describe your fashion style?
Do you ever wear make up?
For Fancy dress? Or on a day to day basis?
Do you dress in women’s clothing?
Do you prefer the more feminine look? Or do they just fit better?

Are you shy about the way you prefer to look?
Do you feel more confident when you dress in this way?
Do you use make up to perfect yourself?
Do you use make up to hide imperfections such as bad skin complexion?

When did you first start wearing make up?
Why did you start wearing make up?

These questions are quite varied and I will need to make a small selection.
I like this idea of making the video look like an interview, but I'm still not sure how I will go about it yet. At this point I feel I have a lot to think about. I may even end up scrapping these questions and making new ones.

IT'S A FLOWER THING..

Within the book Dennis speaks of a photograph which he keeps safe of himself and his mum wearing a flower dress. I want too use this to make my work relevant to the novel.

D&G

Giorgio Grati

After some research it it clear that flowers are a trend of S/S 2012 making my idea of styling the model in a flower dress a current and emerging trend appealing to fashion lovers.

INTERVIEW QUESTIONS..

The idea of making the video in to an interview os to portray how males feel when they wear make up. As i am basing this on the book, 'The Boy in the Dress,' the questions and answers have to relate to the boy in the book. And in this case he likes to dress up as a woman, both in and out of the public eye.
Here is a list of questions I may use for my video..

Do you ever wear make up?
How does it make you feel when you were make up?
Do you feel more confident when wearing make up?
Do you as a male feel self conscious?
Do you feel like a different person?

Im not sure as of yet how long I want the viral advert to be, when this is decided, this will allow me to see how many questions i will be able to fit in.
